Cragsmoor, New York

Mary A. Smits passed away on Monday February 26, 2018 in her home in Cragsmoor, New York.  She was 65. The daughter of the late Virginia and George Andrews, she was born Mary Virginia Andrews on March 11, 1952 in Camden, New Jersey.  Mary was a kind-hearted, gentle person who cared deeply for her friends and loved ones.  As a nurse, Mary was devoted to her patients, bringing a friendly and delicate approach to care for and comfort those in need. Mary instilled an intrinsic kindness in her children and other loved ones. She was also a master at crochet and enjoyed creating wonderfully-designed blankets, hats, and mittens. She also enjoyed painting and was an avid reader.

Mary is survived by her husband, Glenn J. Smits; her children, Corinne Marie Regan and her husband, Brett and their child, Kennedy of San Diego, CA; Amanda Malatras Jacoby and her husband, Joe and their children, Joseph Jr. and Samantha of Wappingers Falls, NY; Jennifer Smits of Teaneck, NJ; and Jim Malatras and his wife, Jenny and children, Max and Ella of Delmar, NY; and siblings George “Craig” Andrews and wife Sue, Kathy Vanderbeck and husband Ron, and Nancy Andrews; and many nieces and nephews.  

Mary will be cremated in a private ceremony. In honor of Mary’s dedication to nursing, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association at http://www.forevernursing.org to help educate the next generation of nurses.
