My sincere condolences to the family. I worked with Joe at Eastern for many years. He was knowledgeable and was able to assist us many times. In some stressful situations. May God keep in his hands forever.

I met Buzzy (as I knew him) through Milton Heumann, who was my doctoral advisor at Rutgers. Buzzy took Milt and me on a tour of Eastern in spring 2001. He was a wonderful man: good-natured, funny, very smart, and obviously well-respected by his peers and the residents of the facility. I met him again a few times thereafter, at parties that Milt had, and always enjoyed talking to him. He was, in a word I learned from Milt, a "mensch" in every sense of the word. Please accept my condolences. -Brian Pinaire

I worked with Joe at Eastern Correctional Facility in the "Guidance Unit". He would come to utilize me to type his tests for the college classes he was teaching. Always witty, engaging, and astute. I jokingly came to refer to him as "Joe Wood" after he was somehow left out of an office conversation, at which time he quipped, "What? Am I wood?"
Joe will be remembered and fondly so.
Blessings to his family at this time of loss.

Alicia, Mateo and I send our love and deepest condolences during this difficult time. Uncle Joey was an amazing beacon of light and always brought a smile to my face. Smart, witty, loving, caring and thoughtful are some of the words that I would use to describe him. He cherished his family, friends and those that he was able to lift up and support.
Truly a loss for the entire family as well as anyone that was lucky enough to meet him. Go Yankees:)

Joe was my neighbor for years, we shared many topics but his passion was his family and U.S. history. We worked next door to each other at E.N.Y.C.F. and on a normal day he would have the Superintend, Deputies, Captains and many that would seek his
counsel, including many of us who worked along side him. His dedication to his profession was realized by many of us and would always seek the better of our clients and tried to impress upon the many inmates that they had a choice to make. We both realized that there were some that could not be induced or convinced to change, although Joe had a strong religious commitment and could not forego the presence of our ALMIGHTY GOD, there were some soles lost.
My thoughts for Joe and Gail has always been a constant vision of admiration. After getting the news of his departure, he came to me in my sleep and said, "I'm not dead" and I can only interpret this message as Joe will always be in my thoughts and sole.
GOD Bless The Britto family all those that Joe touched with his humility and compassion. Nelson

Joe loved to share his love of history with others and presented wonderful history workshops at Pine Bush Public Library. He was a natural teacher who made each talk an interactive event. Joe also supported other PBPL programs, attended events and could coax nearly anyone into a game of chess. We've all lost a good friend and we were so fortunate to have spent time with him. My deepest condolences to the Britto family. I am so sorry for your loss.
