Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles W. Zobel, Jr. (Bill), a long time resident of Pine Bush, NY, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at Valley View Center for Nursing Care and Rehabilitation in Goshen, NY. He was 88. Charles is son of the late Charles W. Zobel, Sr. and Elsie B. (Albrecht) Zobel, brother of the late June A. (Zobel) Joyce, and husband of the late Grace V. (Kunath) Zobel. A graduate of Pine Bush High School, Bill served a short time in the army, after which he turned his attention to business and worked for his uncle, Henry Albrecht, as an appraiser for the Veteran's Administration on Long Island, NY. At the same time, he obtained his pilot's license and enjoyed flying his own plane as well as riding his motorcycle with his new wife, Grace. He and Grace moved to Pine Bush, where they started their own business in the building they purchased on Main Street. "Bill's General Store" later became "Town & Country"; a sporting goods store where Bill was able to share his love of and expertise in hunting and fishing. The annual "Buck Pool" contest at the store was a big hit with all the area hunters! During those years, he also found time to drive the local school bus that his daughters took to and from school each day-oftentimes stopping the bus to point out a deer, fox or bear along the way. Once the Town & Country was well established, Bill's enthusiasm for new adventures found him further success traveling in a sales position for Roskin Bros. of Middletown, NY, serving sporting goods stores throughout New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. His accounts knew him as the salesman who would never steer them wrong and who would show his appreciation of their business with a party for them and their families every summer at his home. He loved a party and enjoyed a lively social life. More often than not, you could find a crowd enjoying a barbeque on a Sunday afternoon in the summer at Bill and Grace's. The winter season did not slow Bill down. When snowmobiles were all the rage, Bill and Grace, equipped with their own snowmobiles, would join the "pack" riding the trails both day and night. Always an avid hunter and fisherman, Bill was a member of the Dwaarkill Rod and Gun Club, where he won many trophies for his trap shooting abilities. He was also a long time member of the American Legion. After retirement, while continuing to hunt and fish, Bill had the opportunity to enjoy his artistic and musical abilities; creating wood sculptures as well as toys for his granddaughter and many unique objects d'art-utilizing items from nature and wildlife. He taught himself to play the concertina. Bill and Grace, maintained the family home on Oregon Trail until her passing in 2008, where Bill remained until his recent hospitalization and short stay at Valley View. He is survived by his loving daughters, Anita E. Zobel of Norwalk, Connecticut and Nadine Z. Kush of Acton, Massachusetts, his loving granddaughter, Liane E. Kush of Acton, Massachusetts and his loving niece, June A. (Joyce) Ingulli of Cheshire, Connecticut.
