Herbert V. Black, a 49 year resident of Pine Bush, passed away on Friday, April 28 at ORMC, Middletown, NY.  He was 88 years old.  He was born on November 2, 1928 in Terre Haute, Indiana to the late Robert Black and Sarah Lewsader Black.  While stationed at Mitchel Field Air Force Base in Hempstead, Long Island, he met and married his wife, Sophie Ann Yatsinko on November 10, 1956
Herbert was a retired Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force after serving his country for over 20 years.  He served his country as a plane refueller during the Korean War, the Berlin Airlift and Vietnam War. After retiring from Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh NY in November of 1968, he worked as a supervisor for the New York State Thruway Bridge Authority from which he retired in 1981.
Herbert had a kind and caring heart, always lending a hand whenever needed.  He always had a smile on his face and was often heard humming a tune.  He had a great sense of humor, enjoyed being around people and always looked forward to seeing his McDonald’s friends on the weekends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include  his loving wife of over 60 years, Sophie at home; three loving daughters, Susan Ingber & Patricia Black of Pine Bush, NY, Cindy Bowers and her husband Stephen of Walker Valley, NY.  granddaughter: Shannon Knuth,  grandson: John Herbert Bowers,  sister: Marguerite Travioli of Jackson, MI, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all the friends, neighbors and loving care givers that helped him through the last years of his life.
Visitation for Herbert’s family and friends will take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 on Friday, May 5th at the William M Gagan Funeral Home at 1525 Burlingham Road, Pine Bush, NY.  Funeral Mass  will be held at 10 am on Saturday, May 6th at the Church of the Infant Savior, 22 Holland Ave, Pine Bush, NY.  Interment will follow at Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, located at  111 Craigville Road, Goshen, NY. Herbert was a member of the G. Paul Bettinger Post 1308 American Legion and has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to G. Paul Bettinger Post 1308, Inc PO Box 651 Pine Bush, NY 12566.
